#17 The Kingfisher Book of Nursery Tales

Title:  The Kingfisher Book of Nursery Tales

Author:  Vivian French
Illustrator: Stephen Lambert
Publisher:  Kingfisher
Copyright: 2003
Pages:  90
Genre/Category: Traditional Literature

I chose this book because of the sheer number of stories in included. There are ninety pages worth of stories that I grew up hearing and reading, and a couple that were new to me. This book is a compilation of such stories as The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and Little Red Riding Hood. I like this book because it’s slightly different than the re-tellings that I remember hearing. Some of the stories have somewhat different endings.

The illustrations in this book are paintings. There are a variety of layouts for the illustrations in this book. Some of the pictures are vignettes, some are in boxes in the middle of the text, and some are full page illustrations. The colors are warm and bright, with a lot of white space in the background. The stories often have a patterned border around the text and illustrations.

I would recommend this book to all ages. It is a great collection of stories that children often hear growing up. The illustrations are great, and I like really enjoyed some of the humor the author added. These stories are excellent for interactive read alouds. I could use any one of these stories for a read aloud and have the students help act out the parts or read along with me. For example, in the story The Three Little Pigs, there is a lot of repetitive text like “huff and puff” and “not by the hair on my chinny chin chin” that is great for getting the students involved in the reading.
