#20 Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes

Title:  Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes

Author:  Eric Litwin
Illustrator: James Dean
Publisher:  Scholastic
Copyright: 2008
Pages:  31
Genre/Category: Fantasy

I chose this book because I have heard a lot about this series from a variety of sources and it was one of the books I ordered from Scholastic. In I Love My White Shoes, Pete the cat is walking around town in his favorite white shoes. It doesn’t take long for Pete to step into a pile of strawberries, which turns his lovely white shoes red. As the story continues, Pete doesn’t seem to care about where he’s going, because he steps in a giant pile of blueberries, then mud, and finally, water. But does all of this bother Pete? Goodness no! Why? Because it’s all good.

The illustrations in this book are painted. Pete the cat is painted a dark navy blue, while his surroundings are a combination of warm yellows, reds, and cool blues. Most of the illustrations are full page, with a few vignettes or half page illustrations. Most of the backgrounds are a single, solid color, and the surroundings are relatively simple.

This book is appropriate for young children, aged preschool or younger, through 2nd grade. This is a fun book to read aloud and is repetitive enough for the students to catch on and be involved. It also includes a song that is repeated throughout, which is another way to get the students involved in the story. This book also sets itself up for the students to make predictions about what color Pete’s shoes are going to turn. I highly recommend this book.
