I chose this book because it is getting close to Cinco de
Mayo and I wanted to learn more about this holiday. It’s one you hear about,
but sometimes it’s hard to remember exactly what it is. The book talks about
some of the history, customs, and practices of the holiday. Cinco de Mayo is a
day celebrating the victory of the Mexican army over the French on May 5th,
1862.
This book utilizes photographs from many different
photographers. The smaller photos are featured on either side of the text, with
larger photos situated formally against the text. The photos are utilized in a
variety of ways, from being used like clipart alongside the text to taking up a
whole page in a two page spread. Maps and old photographs are also used.
This book is appropriate for older elementary students, starting
in fourth grade. This book is full of detail and includes a list of words to
know, helpful links, a list of related books, and a project to make a Mexican
flag. I think this would be a great supplemental book to use when talking about
other cultures, or even when talking about Cinco de Mayo. The teacher could
make use of the project included in the book to have the students make a
Mexican flag. This book also has different Spanish words and definitions all
throughout on the sidebars, which would be great to use as vocabulary builders
for the students.
