Title: The New Kid from the Black Lagoon

Pages:  30

Genre/Category: Picture Book

I chose this book because I had seen the book series advertised at one of the schools I observed in, and I had heard a lot of people talking about this series. The New Kid from the Black Lagoon is about a boy and his class who begin speculating about what Xu, the new boy is going to be like. Their teacher will not tell them where he is from, so they make up stories that get crazier and crazier as they continue talking about him. In the end, Xu turns out to not be so different from the other students.

The illustrations in this book are done with pen and ink. They are very sketch-like, which makes the illustrations look a little fuzzy. Many of the illustrations spread over two pages, with the drawing in a black box. The text is at the bottom of the page and there are added drawings and characters that are drawn outside of the box, sometimes overlapping with the main illustration. This book is filled with little details in the scenes, such as speech bubbles and intricate details that make up the background.

I think the Black Lagoon books are suitable for Kindergarten and up. This book deals with nervousness having to do with school setting, so I think this is a good ice breaker book to read at circle time. This book would also be perfect to read to the students when a new student is joining the class. This book is full of detailed illustrations, so it could be used to show students how to include details in their drawings.
