Genre/Category: Picture Book

I chose this book because it had a shiny cover. Well, that's what caused me to pick it up at least. This book has some great, really varied illustrations. The story is about a young alien named Henry P. Baloney. His teacher gets fed up with him for coming to class late too many times and tells him that he has permanent, lifelong detention unless he has a valid excuse. He tells her an elaborate, far-fetched story of what made him late (having to do with boarding a rocket, landing on a foreign planet, and narrowly avoiding being eaten).

The illustrations in this book are really varied. I would call this a collage, with a lot of digital art elements. The colors are bright and there are a lot of intricate backgrounds. Some of the illustrations are very realistic, while the characters appear very cartoon-like. The illustrations are ordered in various ways on the page. Sometimes an entire scene fills one page, while others are chopped into sections, with a lot happening one one or both pages.

This is a really interesting book that would be visually appropriate for preschoolers and kindergarten, but the text is probably more appropriate for higher elementary grades. This book could be used as a read aloud for any age, but there are a lot of special vocabulary words that would need to be explained. The author uses a lot of vocabulary words from several other languages, a lot of them not commonly heard. This words are highlighted on the page and there is a glossary in the back of the book. This book could be great for introducing students to silly words or words in different languages. The teacher could explain to the students what some of these words are in English compared to the other languages used in the book. The students could look up words in other languages and write their own story.
