I chose the book Llama Llama Mad at Momma because this book series was prominently displayed in the classrooms at some of my previous practicum schools. I wanted to choose a title that I wasn't familiar with, as Llama Llama Red Pajama was the focus in other classrooms. I also liked the rhyme scheme that this book displays. Llama Llama Mad at Momma focuses on little Llama Llama, who goes shopping with Mama Llama. As the day goes on, he becomes increasingly frustrated with having to shop with Mama, until he ends up pitching a fit in the store. Mama Llama calms him down and they try to make the rest of the shopping trip fun.
The illustrations are painted with bright colors and the characters are cartoon-like. The majority of the backgrounds are simplified so that the characters stand out more. The characters in the story also have detailed clothes and accessories that stand out boldly against the background. The characters are painted with very expressive faces.
This book is most appropriate for preschool through second grade. I think this book is great as a supplement for a rhyming lesson. There are so many rhymes on each page, and this would be good for the students so that they could pick out the rhyming words and then be prompted to come up with some on their own. This book could also be used to talk about manners, patience, and how we act in public.
