#9 Fairytale News

Title:  Fairytale News

Author: Colin and Jacqui Hawkins

Illustrator: Colin and Jacqui Hawkins

Publisher: Candlewick Press

Copyright: 2004

Pages: 29

Genre/Category: Fairytale / Picture Book

I chose this book because I like the way it blended many fairytale stories into one. The story begins with Mother Hubbard and her son Jack. They are poor, so Jack goes and finds a job as a paperboy, delivering the Fairytale News to the town. The story includes altered versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack and the Beanstalk.

The illustrations in this book were done with watercolor paint. The illustrations are colorful and there is a lot being depicted on each page. Some pages are very detailed with colorful backgrounds and characters while other pages have small illustrations mixed in with the text. The characters in this story are drawn to look very cartoon-like.

This book is appropriate for third grade and above. This book has a lot of stories going on and there is a lot of text on each page. This could be confusing for lower grades. This book could be a good introduction to Fairytales. I think this book would be a good supplement after reading some traditional fairytales, as the stories differ. However, I believe the differences that are seen in this book could spark some interesting discussion and compare/contrast with the students. This book could be used as a writing prompt after the students are already familiar with a variety of fairytales, Inspired by the book, the students can write their own take on a fairytale.
